Pharmaceutical Companies to Weather Global Recession
AstraZeneca's chief executive David Brennan recently voiced that the pharmaceutical industry could be one of the top performing sectors during the global recession but must keep on adapting its business model. Addressing an industry audience at a Financial Times conference in London earlier this month, Brennan harked back to the recession of 1990-91, when pharma's stocks had provided a 'safe haven' for investors while other sectors were performing badly. He went on to say the sector as a whole was the best performing of all industries over the five consecutive quarters of recession experienced 18 years ago. He said talk of pharma being 'recession proof' was again in currency and agreed that healthcare was needed regardless of economy.
Financial analysts at Datamonitor recently commented that pharmaceutical companies are not only expected to weather global recession successfully but might also use this time “to exploit their unique cash strength by embarking on an acquisition spree”. Recent global issues have led to “the abrupt loss of cheap debt” and in the last decade, companies in other industries have exploited easy access to cheap debt to leverage their return to investors but the the sub-prime crisis in the US and the collapse of big name financial institutions means “banks have no choice but to protect their own capital and stop lending”. Pharmaceutical companies “have wisely stayed out of the cheap debt game and as a result, the credit crunch may play out as a net positive.”
PricewaterhouseCoopers' report from the Health Research Institute identifies 9 significant issues that will impact the health industry in 2009. The report discusses how innovators in the health industry may be able to profit and grow their business in 2009 despite adverse economic realities and predictions that the economy will continue to slow. It also addresses the implications of these issues for businesses and the pharmaceutical industry-at-large. You can read/download a copy of this report on the Downloads page of the Resources section.
