Recentin disappoints in colorectal cancer

AstraZeneca’s developmental oncology drug Recentin has failed to meet its primary endpoint in a phase II/III study.

The once-daily oral Recentin (cediranib) was compared with Roche’s Avastin (bevacizumab) in patients with first-line metastatic colorectal cancer.

It is a blow for AstraZeneca, admits Alan Barge, the company’s head of oncology: “While we recognised that challenging Avastin would be a high hurdle, it is still disappointing, despite evidence of clinical activity with Recentin, not to have met the primary endpoint.”

Survey backs waiting room promotion, says IDS

A UK company specialising in promoting disease awareness messages to patients says a new study proves the value of its approach.

IDS uses leaflets and posters in GP surgeries, pharmacies and the internet to communicate its clients’ messages, and says the research proves that patients are receptive to the information.

The survey in the British Medical Journal of Medical Practice has found that 82% of patients said they saw a waiting room poster and 92% remembered the subject and content.

The impact of the campaigns will be measured so that the most effective can be repeated across the country.

NICE has rejected Celgene’s Vidaza for use on the NHS to treat the rare bone marrow disease myelodysplastic syndrome.

Roche halts ocrelizumab trials

The future of Roche and Biogen Idec’s rheumatoid arthritis drug ocrelizumab has been thrown into doubt after the manufacturers decided to suspend its development.

The companies put their programme on hold after fears were raised about the safety of patients participating in the trials.

An independent body called the Ocrelizumab RA & Lupus Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) looked at four rheumatoid arthritis (RA) studies (SCRIPT, FEATURE, FILM and STAGE) and two in lupus (BELONG and BEGIN).
