career advice for pharmaceutical physicians
Entry Level Physicians A physician’s initial training is oriented towards an NHS career path. As a result, physicians looking to transition into the pharmaceutical industry often have little knowledge or information about opportunities available to them.
On the Jobs for Doctors page in the Candidates section, you can read in more depth about jobs that physicians can undertake. On the Downloads page in the Resources section you can also read articles published in BMJ Careers about working in the pharmaceutical industry as a medic. They were written by doctors we have succesfully recruited for pharmaceutical companies.
Service providers to the pharmaceutical industry, Clinical Research Organisations (CROs) also employ physicians. There are a small number of openings available in industries outside the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors and we can also advise on these opportunities.
Two of the biggest misconceptions about pharmaceutical medicine are that most roles are in sales or that medics should try to achieve Consultant level before making a transition. Neither of these are true.
Where pharmaceutical companies and CROs are looking to recruit for a role in Clinical Research, physicians who have acted as an investigator or co-investigator in clinical trials are strongly preferred. But for roles in Medical Affairs of Pharmacovigilance, physicians almost always take up industry roles at SHO or SpR level with at least two years' post registration training as explained on the Jobs for Doctors page in the Candidates section.
We help you to understand the day-to-day responsibilities of a particular role and which functional route is right for you, considering your strengths and career goals.
For entry level physicians, we are always happy to give advice and invite candidates we have screened and who are fully committed to making a move into industry, to training workshops: NHS2Pharma. Please take a look at the Training section for more information.
Industry Physicians For pharmaceutical physicians with industry experience, we look at the skills you have already gained and those you wish to gain to help achieve your career aspirations and personal aims. We help you to examine and definine your personal drivers, develop a strategic plan and spend time with you looking at future roles considering your strengths and career goals.
We are currently planning an initiative that will give in-depth guidance to medics looking to climb the industry career ladder to more senior pharmaceutical roles.
Recruitment Resources For additional information about the industry, advice on CV and interview preparation and on-the-job tips across a range of professional and interpersonal topics, please take a look at the Downloads page in the Resources section. Articles about working in the Pharma industry are regularly published in various pharmaceutical publications; such as the BrAPP Pharmaceutical Physician Journal, Pharma Times and Scrip. These articles are added as they are released.
We provide career counselling on a 1:1 basis rather than blanket advice. For further information, please visit the Enquiries page in the Candidates section, where you will find an online form to contact us.
